The Village, People, and Culture in Mustang Trek

Mustang is a remote area of Nepal, and its headquarters are in Jomsom. It is one of the best-preserved areas in the world due to its isolation from the outside world. Most of the population in this area still speaks traditional Tibetan languages. This district is famous for Muktinath (a popular Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site), apples, Marfa brandy, and ancient villages.

Mustang Trek offers a rich Himalayan cultural experience that perfectly combines cultural heritage, mountains covered by Himalayan beauty, and biological and natural diversity.

Mustang is one of the most inspiring historical sites in the country, with many caves, monasteries, forts, temples, and monks. For all these reasons, the Mustang region is a popular trekking destination in Nepal. The upper Mustang treks take you to the Buddhist kingdom, contributing to preserving Tibetan culture.

The upper Mustang area was restricted to foreigners until 1992 but is now open to everyone. For trekking in this restricted area, you must get a special permit issued by the government of Nepal through the trekking agency registered in Nepal.

Need Special Permit for Upper Mustang

To get a special permit, you must have at least two people and pay USD 500 per person to the Government of Nepal. Individual trekkers, such as in other restricted areas, are also less allowed in this area. This means you should get a reliable and experienced trekking agency to process the permit and make the necessary arrangements.

Trekking in the Mustang Region is a wonderful lifetime experience with the beautiful Himalayan scenery, including two mountains above 8,000 meters, Annapurna (8,91 m) and Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), as well as beautiful landscapes, Mustang King Durbar, Monasteries, etc.

Climb the top of the famous Lo-Manthang, surrounded by 40 unique peaks, and enjoy panoramic views of the Mustang and Annapurna areas. You experience Tibetan culture and hospitality as you visit the spiritual Gompas. The whole area has a mysterious Tibetan culture that gives you an authentic experience of the world’s most beautiful and unique trekking area.
