The village, People, and Culture in Mustang Trek

Mustang is a remote area of Nepal and its headquarters is Jomsom. It is one of the most preserved areas in the world due to its isolation from the outside world. Most of the population in this area still speaks traditional Tibetan languages. This district is also famous for Muktinath (a popular Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site), apple, Marfa brandy, and ancient villages.

The upper Mustang area was restricted to foreigners until 1992 but is now open to everyone. For trekking in this restricted area, you must get a special permit issued by the Government of Nepal through the trekking agency registered in Nepal.

Need Special Permit for Upper Mustang 

To get a special permit you must have at least 2 persons and pay USD 500 per person to the Government of Nepal. In this area also, individual trekkers such as in other restricted areas are less allowed. This means you should get a reliable and experienced trekking agency to process the permit and make the arrangements you need.

Trekking in the Mustang Region is a wonderful lifetime experience with the beautiful Himalayan scenery including two mountains above 8,000 meters – Annapurna 8,091m and Dhaulagiri 8,167m as well as beautiful landscapes, Mustang King Durbar, Monasteries, etc.

Food and Accommodation

Nowadays, all the options in this area are available at tea houses/lodges. No need to camping as before, you can find tea houses/lodges in almost all places. And good food and accommodation facilities are available in those teahouses. For Mustang Trek, prior trekking experience is not required but there should be good physical fitness. Autumn and spring are the best time for a Mustang trek.
